September 2023 Newsletter Latest News Despite it being the summer holidays (even though the weather has had other ideas), it’s been a busy few months again here at The Food Works SW. Perhaps whilst lots of people take their holidays over August, it gives others time to focus and a chance to work on development? It certainly seems so here, there has been some great development work in the kitchens lately. We had our competition winners, Well Fruited. claiming their free time in The Dairy which you can read about here. We’ve also welcomed Russel & Attwell who have been developing micro batches of their delicious fresh chocolates. HIT Training have been working on their new recipe book. Tom from The Good Pud Co was developing his delicious cookie dough, chocolate brownies and sticky toffee puddings. And with the seasons changing, Butcombe have been perfecting their Autumn/Winter menu ready for it’s launch soon. So it’s been a good month for samples! The technical team have been working hard too with Rachel helping Miles Tea retain their SALSA certification.   We’ve launched a series of events for the Autumn with more to come in the new year. There’s a photography/videography workshop and other training sessions for Start-Ups, SALSA certification and a great PR and Comms session for you to sign up to. Check them out below. Taste of The West will also be hosting a conference - ‘The Future of Food & Drink in the South West’ here at The Food Works SW on October 10th which we’re really excited to be involved with as we know so many of you have been involved with the awards. Please enquire for more information. There are a few localised grants available at the moment too, read on to find out more about them. The Food Works SW Technical Team SALSA certification has been keeping Rachel busy over the last few months with multiple businesses. Most recently Miles Tea, in Minehead, have successfully retained their SALSA status. Rachel’s helped them with the preparation as well as the audit itself. SALSA helps you take the next step in accessing retailers and helps you stand out. We can guide you through the process step by step with as much or as little support as you need. Our packages are always bespoke so if you’re thinking about getting SALSA certified, get in touch today. Events We’re running an exciting series of events between now and Christmas. The events have been planned based on what our customers have told us they want and need, they vary in topic and there is something suitable for everyone, no matter the size of your business. Member News Trethowan Dairies - cheddar challenge Set to be the biggest cheddar event the world has ever seen, the first edition of the Great British Cheddar Challenge will take place on Saturday 16 September, with tasting boxes now available to reserve. One of our customers, Trethowan Brothers, is one of the chosen 6 cheesemakers in this competition! You can find out more and order your box here Kinda Co teams up with River Cottage A tenant since March 2021, we’ve watched Kinda Co grow and grow from the already amazingly successful business that they were onto now even greater things! Ellie has now teamed up with Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and team at River Cottage and is teaching a series of dairy-free cheese making courses. Find out more here. Other News WECA - Business Growth and Adaptions Grant This scheme is designed to help SMEs in Bristol, South Gloucestershire and Bath and North East Somerset to purchase new products and equipment to help increase or improve production or start production of physical, tangible products. It can also be used to adapt to changes in legislation enacted in the last three years. The fourth and final round of the grant is due to go live at the end of September. This fourth round will be open for applications from the 21st September to 5th October. Click here for more information South West Enterprise Fund Grants – Somerset Community Foundation If you currently live in the counties of Somerset, North Somerset or BANES and want to start your own business and know what products or services you want to provide, or have been trading for under 2 years then this is for you! If you meet all the criteria above, then you can ask us for up to £2,000. There is no minimum amount, but it would expected to send applications of £500 upwards. This money can be used to pay for the equipment, materials, stock and services you need in order to get your business running (you cannot apply for salary/your own living costs).
